Chapter Nineteen

Erica ordered food to be delivered for the team. She might have had the chance to grab a sandwich, but she knew how hard everyone was working, and plenty wouldn’t have had the same opportunity. These little touches were always appreciated—and people who felt valued worked harder—but she was also aware that it meant keeping people in the office. With the number of reporters still hanging around, desperate to get a juicy headline for their newspapers, it was worth it to keep the team away from them.

“Erica,” Shawn said, getting her attention. He wasn’t alone. “I mean DI Swift, this is my cousin, Jasmin Webb. She’s agreed to help us, and as you know, there’s no time to waste, so I brought her straight here.”

The young woman was beautiful. Big dark eyes, thick eyelashes, high cheekbones. Baggy sweatpants hung from her hips, and a tiny top exposed her belly. On her feet were white trainers, and heavy gold jewellery hung around her neck and wrists. She wore her beauty in the unaware way the young often did.

“I’m DI Erica Swift.” Erica held out her hand. “Thank you for coming.”

Jasmin glanced at Erica’s hand and quickly shook it. “I don’t even know if I can do anything to help yet.”

“I appreciate you even trying. Honestly, I hate to admit it, but we’re at a loss here. Nothing is bringing up any leads. I assume you’ve seen the feed online?”

Jasmin nodded. “Yeah, I’ve seen it. I did wonder if it had been staged—a publicity stunt for something, but it looks real to me.”

“We believe it’s real. We’ve tracked down the victims’ families, and the victims are both missing.”

“That must be so scary for them.”

“Yes, it is,” Erica agreed. “That’s why we need to find them. The first man is called Richard Morrisey. He has a wife and two young children who desperately want him home. The second victim is called Catherine Taura, and she works for a large energy company, and she’s married. But listen, Jasmin, I want you to know that if you’re not able to find anything that might help us, it isn’t your fault. This isn’t your responsibility at all. Okay? A whole team of trained police haven’t been able to find them, so please don’t put it on your shoulders if this doesn’t work.”

It was the thing Erica was most worried about, especially now she’d seen just how young the girl was. What if these two people were killed, their deaths streamed on social media, and Jasmin mentally took responsibility for it? She didn’t want the girl to feel that way, but what could she do? They had literally tried everything and come up empty-handed. Now they were desperate.

“It’s okay, I understand. I want to help. I’ve been following the story, like most people have, and I can’t believe someone would go to this level to make a point.”

Erica eyed her. “You think whoever is behind this is making a point?”

Jas shrugged. “What else could it be?”

Erica gave the girl a nod and turned to Shawn.
